 Remembering 2017!

Recent stormy weather is keeping birds hidden in their shelters longer than normal, making it a little more difficult to find photo opportunities. As a result, I’m posting some favourite photos from 2017, taken a few years prior to the start of this blog.

Screech Owlet siblings: Several Wood Duck boxes were installed in Enniskillen Township many years ago. The nesting boxes are not only used by Wood Ducks, but also provide good wintering shelter and nesting spaces for Eastern Screech Owls!

Screech Owl checking to see who's walking down the trail.

A very surprised Owlet!

Quintuplets!!

Spring is a busy time for school field trips. Several classes of children walked under these 5 siblings during the 2 days they were visible along that trail. The parents then moved the owlets to a quieter, out of site location and they were not found again.
A male Bobolink sung from a hedgerow on a rural road in central Lambton County.

Female Eastern Bluebird gathering nesting material.

Black-bellied Plover taking a break during migration, offshore at Kettle Point.

American Bittern in classic "frozen camouflage" pose.

An acrobatic Black-capped Chickadee, just hanging around on a Hawthorn needle.

Look closely and you will notice that the Eastern Screech Owl's eyes are crossed. Directly in front of him is a Black-capped Chickadee, oblivious to the nearby predator threat as he hunts for food. In spring, male Screech Owl's will sit on a branch facing the nest cavity where his mate sits.
