 Signs of Spring!

The return of Red-winged Blackbirds is to me, a first sign of spring! Other signs of spring follow:

7 Turkey Vultures soared past our yard on March 5th!!
A definite sign of the approaching Spring season!

Noisy Geese!!

Canada Geese have started gathering in open water and are being very vocal!!

Common Grackles are back and one enjoyed a drink in the heated bird bath.

The increased drumming of Woodpeckers in the spring helps birds like the Downy Woodpecker establish territory and find a mate.

Frisky Squirrels! Mating season is here!

Wooly Bear caterpillar "marching" across a paved path on March 3!

Although American Robins can be found throughout the winter, they are a sign of spring for many people. Sumac berries are one of the foods that will sustain them when other fruit is scarce.

Purple Willow. The soft catkins are becoming prominent as they emerge from the buds that protected them through the winter.
