A New Birding Year Has Begun:

Each January 1st, we start with a fresh slate and begin a new species count. After 2 days of 2021, I have spotted 58 species while Deryl has managed to see 65 species. Finding 9 Great Blue Herons near Corunna today was definitely a highlight!

A walk along the Suncor Trail earned us 16 species, including this Northern Shrike which has been hanging around for a few weeks. There is a lot of good habitat for it to hunt and hide. Our first Kingfisher of the year was found perched above the Wawanosh Drain at the end of the Suncor Trail. (No photos of that flighty bird!)

We travelled down the St. Clair River and saw a few duck species, including 2 pairs of Common Goldeneye.

A family of Mute Swans drifted with the current.

The vibrant colours of a male American Kestrel glowed in a deciduous tree bare of leaves at the Dow Wetlands. We saw 12 bird species at this site including a pair of Northern Flickers which flew overhead and landed in a distant tree.

A few Snowy Owls can be found in fields. Watch for white lumps. However we have learned that many distant white lumps transform into plastic white pails when viewed through binoculars!

Although we haven't found a Peregrine Falcon yet in 2021, we watched this female Peregrine Falcon have some lunch near the Bluewater Bridges on New Year's Eve. The male was supervising from a nearby lamp post.

Happy New Year!
