 New Year, New Bird List!

Our annual January 1st birding blitz started in Canatara Park at 8:00 a.m. Seventeen birders spent all or most of the day with us as we toured the Sarnia area.

We explored a variety of habitats to try to maximize our species' count.
Most of the birds were too distant to photograph, however we usually had good views through binoculars and scopes. Canada Geese and Cackling Geese were plentiful at Hiawatha Horse Park.
22 Bufflehead gathered together in Brights Grove.

While standing at the edge of a woodlot, we heard the call of a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers and saw them fly. (Just imagine that you can see them flying through the trees! 😉)

We ended the day by the Sarnia Waterfront. A Common Loon has been hanging around for a couple of weeks and stayed long enough to get on our 2024 list!

Lesser Scaup, female

Black Duck

Redhead Duck
A total of 42 species of birds were found during our 6 hour day!
