 The American Crow:

The American Crow is a species that I have regularly seen on my recent walks.

These highly intelligent birds have been known to use tools to hunt for food. This crow was digging in the sand with a stick last fall in his quest for breakfast.

Crows are known to forage for all kinds of food. Insects, spiders, snails, earthworms, frogs, small snakes, and eggs. (Cornell Lab, All About Birds.) Crows are also scavengers, stealing food from garbage cans including bagels and pizza. (above)

After probing in the sand, a crow flew to a tree to clean off his sand covered beak.

A large group of crows is known as a "Murder of Crows." When this many are together, watch carefully, as they might be harassing a hawk or owl!

Crows can often be seen chasing other birds including the Common Raven above...

and raptors such as Red-tailed Hawks!

Occasionally they will be chased by smaller blackbirds such as these 3 Common Grackles.
