Signs of Spring!!
More Blackbird species are migrating north! Left to right: 2 Common Grackles, 1 Brown-headed Cowbird and 1 Red-winged Blackbird enjoying the last of the evening sun.
Just down the road from the Blackbirds, we found 150 Tundra Swans at their night rest stop. They were in a flooded valley sheltered a bit from the wind and probably headed to the onion fields in north Lambton the next morning.
A pair of Mute Swans decided they'd had enough of the cold weather on Tuesday and headed south down the St. Clair River. Although they appear to be flying through the Bluewater Bridge support beams, they actually made a last minute decision to fly under the bridge structure.
Canada Geese are preparing to nest on the buildings at the animal farm again. The adults must have had success in past years since they continue to nest in non-traditional locations. It is a big drop for the young goslings but they are safe from ground predators while in the nest!
On Friday afternoon, a dozen Ring-billed Gulls were
fishing along the Lake Huron shoreline at Canatara Park.
They didn't seem bothered by the splashing wave action.
The gulls hovered above the water before diving into the slush. We assume yesterday's strong north winds trapped and stunned the small fish in the slush, making for easy pickings by the gulls.
Lunch was served for many of the birds!
A beautiful sunset in East Lambton on the night we saw the Tundra Swans.
