Butterfly "Lifer"

I was so very excited to find (with help from a friend) a Compton Tortoiseshell in Canatara Park. It's the first time I have ever seen this beauty and I saw it again today. It is believed to be the longest-lived adult butterfly in Ontario, surviving for up to 10 months. They over winter as an adult coming out of hibernation in March or sometimes February. Butterflies are bountiful now.  If you have a chance to check out a nearby meadow soon, there is so much to see in the fluttery world!

Hummingbird or Clearwing moths are more abundant these day. Fun to watch them hover as they sip nectar from flowers. Wild Bergamot is a favourite food source!

Someone's been playing in the pollen!!! This bee loves the flowers on the Rose of Sharon in our backyard.

After a recent rainfall, a Goldfinch's reflection is visible in a puddle as it took a drink.

A female Kingfisher sits quietly in her perch above
the water waiting to catch an unsuspecting fish.

Hard to imagine insects living in the treated wood of hydro poles but this Red-headed Woodpecker found some food to take back to the nest to feed the young bird(s).
