East Lambton, January 8th:
It was a beautiful afternoon for a drive and we decided to head towards the SE corner of Lambton County. This barn was near a distant pair of Golden Eagles sitting in a tree. We were able to identify them by looking through the viewing scope.
It took awhile, but we eventually saw a small flock of Snow Buntings, feeding in a field close to the road!
A Rough-legged Hawk spread its wings as it left a wire perch. "These hawks spend the summer eating lemmings on the arctic tundra, tending a cliffside nest under a sun that never sets. Winter is the time to see this large, open-country hawk in Southern Canada and the U.S. where it hunts for small rodents. Cornell Lab, All About Birds."
5 Red-tailed Hawks were hunting in a valley and were joined by a Common Raven! Above, one of the hawks made an attempt to scare off the Raven.
We found 4 Eastern Bluebirds on a wire! Always surprising to find this species during the winter months, but if they can find food and shelter, they are known to survive a Southern Canadian winter.
